Ikariam-Unit Efficiency

Using ratios to enhance your army

The units of Ikariam are very rudimentary. There is no system of counters in place, and therefor there are no specialized units that are good for taking out certain types of enemies. Rather, there are units good at defense, those good at attack, and those who aren't proficient at anything in particular. Further, there are seige units, possibly the closest to a counter system, designed to breach walls to obtain battle bonuses.
Another problem presented in the Ikariam battle system is that the developers havn't worked out all the bugs, and battle bonuses from armor upgrades, weapon upgrades, and breached walls don't always work. These issues present a problem in choosing the best unit for the job. Since there is no counter system, like (swordsmen>pikemen>cavalry>archers>swordsmen), it the best information generals have to go by is the attack and defense values. Quite typically, as you progress in your research level, you gain units capable of dishing out as well as taking in more damage. However, this doesn't mean these new units are the best for the job.
For this reason, I made a table of all the units and their values. I then divided their values - most importantly attack and defense points - by the upkeep. This gives you a number that tells you how many attack or defense points you get for every piece of gold you spend on upkeep. Using this information, generals can develop armies that would seem ridiculous and unbalanced, but are actually maximized in value per gold, as there is no balance in the game (that is, a unit that is more effective against another unit).

I have embedded the bonuses that assault and defensive units receive, though I did not include upgrades as to my knowledge they do not always work, and so are not reliable.
Use proportions to compare units

Bombardier(10) v Steam Giant(x) (attack values)

260(10) = 100x
228.000 = 068

2600 = 100x
228.0 = 68

2600(68)(228) = 100x(228)(68)
228.00000000 = 00068

2600(68) = 100x(228)

176800 = 22800x

176800 = 22800x
22800.0 = 22800

7.75 = x

What does it mean?
I just gave you explicit proof that 7.75 (make it 8) steam giants will give you the same amount of attack points for your gold as 10 bombardiers will. Crazy huh? This is a little complicated, so here's a very simple one for you.

260(10) = 100x
this equation will tell you that you need 26 steam giants to attain the same attack as 10 bombardiers. Sounds like bombardiers are better, right? Wrong! Multiply each unit number by upkeep:

Bombadier (10)(228)=2280
Steam Giant (26)(68) = 1768

With 26 steam giants, you have the same attack as 10 bombardiers for less money. Use this to your advantage, but mind that this does not consider upgrades. You can use the same calculations for naval units.
